Overview

The Quidway NetEngine 40 universal switching router (USR) series (abbreviated as NE40) fully inherits the design philosophy and key technology of the NE40 core router, and it is launched by Huawei to cater to large-scale enterprise network, industrial network, IP MAN and IP backbone network.

Based on the distributed network processor hardware forwarding and non-blocking switching technology, the NE40 is available with an outstanding expansion capability, and comprehensively supports IPv6.

The NE40 integrates the powerful IP service processing capability and L3 Ethernet switching capability of the core router, and provides richer services, more flexible networking and more ideal performance cost. The NE40 is the important source power for the development of IP backbone network and IP MAN towards the nature of broadband, security and service.

The Distributed 5th Generation Router

The NE40, as the 5th generation router, adopts the industry-leading high performance network processor (NP) technologies, fully inheriting the architecture of the full distributed hardware processing, and combining the flexibility of software and high performance of hardware organically, thus providing wire-speed forwarding performance, rapid service upgrading, expanding capacities and guaranteeing customers investment to the largest extent.

All the NE40s in the existing network can provide the IPv6 forwarding performance of hardware in the mode of software upgrading, without the need of buying any IPv6 hardware equipment again, which saves a lot of expenses of users and fully protects the user investment, it reflects the outstanding expansion capability of 5th generation routers. The excellent expandability of NE40 accelerates the development of the IP network towards the nature of broadband, security, service and intelligence.

The high-quality QoS capability lays a solid technical foundation for the network service. The NE40 implements the intelligent service awareness, provides the advanced queue scheduling algorithm and SARED congestion control algorithm, to exactly ensure the bandwidth, delay and jitter of different services, and to meet the requirements of different users and at different service levels.

The NE40 is available with rich service capabilities and high-quality, secure and comprehensive MPLS VPN solutions based on the distributed hardware processing, and it provides the high-efficiency multicast forwarding capability; it provides the services such as Gigabit wire-speed NAT. The NE40 is a high cost-effective service router. The NE40 is available with a fast expansion capacity, comprehensively supporting IPv6, and can fast implement the new services that cannot be predicted, to assist users in improving their competition. It can be said a solid foundation for the future IP telecommunication network (IPTN).

Flexible Networking Capability

It owns a great variety of interface types, supports the RPR ring network technology, provides the perfect protocol function and is able to deal with various complex networking to meet the requirements of IP MAN, backbone network and operation supporting network.

The NE40 provides such security measures as packet filtering, traffic sampling, port imaging and security log, and it is an ideal device for constructing the highly secure and maintainable network.

High Reliability

The key components of NE40 include the route processing system, switching fabric system, clock system and power supply system, and the management buses are all redundancy hot backup, to realize the hot switching based on status. All the components support hot swap. They adopt the passive backplane design, providing the hot patching technology to implement the full smooth upgrading of software. They support the dynamic routing protocol and MPLS traffic engineering; provide the protection mechanisms such as IP/MPLS fast re-routing, virtual routing redundancy protocol (VRRP), BFD enhanced VRRP, VPN fast re-routing, RPR, and BFD fast link detection; Support the Fast Routing Backup function to effectively ensure the high-speed and reliable running of the whole network.

USR of the NE40 series bases itself upon the localized design and production with the features of L3 switch integrated on the basis of the core router. It is available with both a powerful processing capability to meet the requirements of the IP backbone network and rich L2 features. It reflects an extremely high cost performance by greatly saving the network construction cost in addition to satisfying the service application, so it can be applied in the peripheral layer of the IP backbone network and MAN.
